It was reported today that we have 92,120,000 people out of work, and not looking for work. That the number of Americans 16 and older who did not participate in the labor force climbed to a record high of 92,120,000 in June, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
That is up (over a two month period) 111,000 from the 92,009,000 Americans who were not participating in the labor force. There are two, but really only one conclusion that can be reached from this data.
The first is that at this rate (660,000 or 7.1% increase in new unemployed per year), by the year 2020 (a little more than five years) this number will increase to a little over 130 million people not working, and not looking for work, in this country. There were 139,415,000 jobs in Nov 2010, and that number has most likely decreased since then. This translates to approximately the same number of eligible, able bodied, people choosing to not work as there are people who are actively engaged in our workforce.
The second is that those same 130 million ‘scab’ Americans, (along with their lazy family members) will have no place to go when their vaunted government determines it can no longer support them. In the meanwhile,
“When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.” – Benjamin Franklin
“It is my principle that the will of the majority should prevail. If they approve the proposed constitution in all its parts, I shall concur in it cheerfully, in hopes that they will amend it whenever they shall find it works wrong. This reliance cannot deceive us, as long as we remain virtuous.” –Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson warned us, with a caveat that we must remain “virtuous”. How can we be consider virtuous when we steal from our neighbors?
A lazy, uninspired, and uneducated people such as we have today cannot help but fail in a most miserable way. We are primed by our own greed and self-deceit for destruction. As Jefferson put it, when discussing the debt of one generation upon the next, that these things are,
“…axioms also pregnant with salutary consequences.” – Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Earle, 1823
“That our Creator made the earth for the use of the living and not of the dead; that those who exist not can have no use nor right in it, no authority or power over it; that one generation of men cannot foreclose or burthen its use to another, which comes to it in its own right and by the same divine beneficence; that a preceding generation cannot bind a succeeding one by its laws or contracts; these deriving their obligation from the will of the existing majority, and that majority being removed by death, another comes in its place with a will equally free to make its own laws and contracts; these are axioms so self-evident that no explanation can make them plainer; for he is not to be reasoned with who says that non-existence can control existence, or that nothing can move something. They are axioms also pregnant with salutary consequences.”
Are we are now at the point in our Republic where we cannot succeed, and are what we are witnessing today not the “salutary consequences” of which Jefferson wrote?
