Stealth weekend

13 Nov

Twas a good time.  Well worth the short drive.

Re-visited a town I haven’t been to in years.  Went in search of a loudmouth, but ended up with just some syrup, and some music.  Did get to see an ‘old friend’, and got up close to a seriously funny person.  If you’re in the area next year…

Sounds fascinating Soffitrat. When I traveled over the road I passed by Henderson several times. We have a place much like that about 45 miles north of us at Mountain View, Arkansas. All sorts of activity year round on the town square and surrounding areas. There is true “Americana” found in places like Henderson and Mt View.

There are those that are trying to destroy this but never will.

Yep. I know Mountain View pretty well, so I know what you mean. I love it up there. Especially the White. Henderson is not of that quality, but it’s an old International Paper type town. Lots of timber. and oil…

There is no better place to live than small towns like that. It could be argued that everybody knows everyone’s’ business but they are generally good people that are helpful to each other. The small town I grew up near (Tioga, La) was an old railroad town, years ago there was a sawmill there on Flagon Bayou, MAYBE a 100-125 people when I was growing up! The old commissary is still standing, in fact it is a local museum now but it was the main grocery/hardware store and hang-out! The only other grocery was about eight miles away in Pineville.

Man I miss those days of 5 cent cokes and candy bars and fishing with a cane pole in the mill pond!

Not sure where Tioga is, but sure know Pineville, and Jena! Can be some rough territory. For outsiders. Fortunately, they didn’t consider me such. I can smoke nutria. They’ll eat anything down there!

Tioga is about 8 miles north of Pineville on old Hwy 71 which is La hwy 3225 today.

All my Granny Smiths’ people (Maddox) are from the Jena/White Castle/Fishville area, they were strung out for several miles along Hwy 8. For the most part those folks are pretty tolerant of outsiders. When I met my mother-in-law for the first time in Florida, she pulled Mary aside and asked what she should cook for supper. Mary told her to cook whatever she wanted to because “he will eat anything”!

Nutria is a delicacy to many people down there, there dang sure isn’t a shortage of them. My favorite is BBQ coon or armadillo.

Well, before this is over with, we all might be eating nutria! I’ve still got one in one of my lakes that I’ve got to get. They’re hell on dams. That’s why they make bentonite.

“That’s why they make bentonite.” A scoped .22 rifle will do away with the need for bentonite!!

Unless one is as busy (lazy) as me, and let’s them dig too much. I already stay up 19 hrs a day! No shit!

Soffitrat you’re gonna tear up something running at that pace! Did you listen to what your doctor told you? No!

And you didn’t tell him what you told the rest of us either I’ll wager. Take a break, go to Henderson and hang out with the family again!

Henderson was a mischief run. The old saying, I can sleep when I’m dead, applies to all of us. We don’t have time to sleep now days. Got another Franklin half today. Every coin, every bullet, every roll of toilet paper. Helps. Still trying to get up your way next week. I’ll keep you posted. Finished shredding the North 40 this afternoon, and have two coming tomorrow to break down the garden for the winter (till it, roll up hoses and sprinklers, break down the trellises,, etc.) burning burn piles, and mending a fence. I’ll finish the South 40 while they work.

Yeah we’ll get plenty sleep when we’re dead alright! By all means let me know about next week. You still have my home/cell numbers I’m sure, and we are keeping both of the days open that you spoke of.

I have had an easy week, did some fence mending on the ranch, lost a horse and spent most of the morning taking care of that and I’ve put out some more rolls of hay. (didn’t take a fall this time however!) I hated to start putting out hay this early (in October) but the grass is gone. Always something coming at us isn’t it?! But it’s alright, that’s part of it.

Mary had some medicine to pick up in Heber Springs this morning so we made a day of it shopping, adding to our stash, then stopped by Bridal Veil Falls on the way home for a little sight-seeing!

I quit. I resigned. Then, I went back. I know, I know… I’m a pussy. You don’t have to tell me. I’ve got 15 SF friends to arrive here on the day the SHTF, so PD had better pick it up and begin to understand that there is more going on than securing a COL increase and putting that in writing in some damn policy handbook! They’d better understand that by this time next year, they’ll be lucky to have Obama’s 28 hr. work week! They’d better keep their heads in the game. No. I’m not going anywhere. Not yet! I’m out shredding the South 40 and working around the place to get ready to travel. See ya later!

You’re too dedicated for your own good! That city is fortunate to have you.

Well, my on-line critics wouldn’t think so. 🙂 But then…, they can eat shit, and die. Thanks, Danny!
