Garden’s in!

02 Mar

Got the garden ready today.  About a 1/4 acre.  All tilled, furrowed, trellised, and some plants in the ground.  I got two trailer loads of chicken manure put in it this year.  We irrigate from an adjacent 3 acre pond.  Should produce a lot of food and really help cut the grocery bills. It will be invaluable should our economy collapse, as we believe it will.  I will try to add photos tomorrow.

I am fortunate.

Hell!  We’re all fortunate!  That the collapse was forestalled until the blasted winter passed.  At least we have a chance now.  Get goin!

That’s great Soffitrat. There is something about the smell fresh dirt in the spring and seeing food being produced in front of your eyes! That’s a feeling that’s hard to beat with a good or bad economy. And dang it, it simply tastes better!

I agree with your thoughts on making it through the winter, this is a break we all needed, for a number of reasons.

Yeah, well… that dirt doesn’t smell too good right now. The chicken shit is still fairly fresh! It’ll (the odor) be gone in a week.

Yes and sometimes it’s hard not to think about that chicken shit when you’re eatin’ them beans and squash! But it’s still worth it!

Your last statement makes me think of an account I read of a soldier telling General Lee immediately after the surrender that “we will all go home, make a crop and come back and try ’em again next year”.

        That’s the spirit!

Yep. I didn’t even mention feeding the troops. Did I?

I figure that we’ll have to billet and feed them. OUR soldiers. When Johnny comes marchin through. What? Would you not?

Never gave that much though, but heck yeah! I doubt our garden will produce enough to feed very many but there’s plenty wild game around and we’ll cook it up for ’em.

There’s a bunkhouse on the ranch that will make good quarters for probably at least a platoon! And two trailers for Officers/NCOs…we can fix ’em up buddy!!!
